About...
The National Writers Series and Front Street Writers offers a variety of creative writing workshops for students of all ages.
Students participating in these workshops are invited to submit to the National Writers Series Literary Review. Published annually in the spring by the Writers Series of Traverse City, the National Writers Series literary journal showcases the writing of students, grade school through adult, who have taken NWS writing classes/workshops. Our writing workshops are instructed by publishing professionals, published authors, and educators. |

Elementary Workshop Series (Grades 3 - 6)
Elementary workshops are for students who will be in grades 3 - 6 at the start of the 2014/15 school year. These workshops have one adult facilitator and two writing mentors. All classes (unless otherwise noted) take place at the Front Street Writers Studio located at 123 W. Front Street in downtown Traverse City.
Space in each session is limited. Both payment and registration must be completed to hold your spot in the class. *Payment must be made online with a credit card at the time of registration.

My Amazing SummerJune 16 - 20, 9 - 11 AM Front Street Writers Studio, 123 W. Front Street, Traverse City What is the most fantastic summer you can imagine? Building a rocket ship to explore the universe? Visiting ancient civilizations in a time machine? If you can imagine it, you can write it. The description of your "best summer ever" may even give you some ideas for how to spend the rest of your summer vacation. Villains 101June 23 - 27, 9 - 11 AM Front Street Writers Studio, 123 W. Front Street, Traverse City What sets an evil mastermind on the path to global domination and destruction? Where do villains come from? What do they like for breakfast? You get to decide! Participants will invent their own villains, devise their dastardly deeds, and write their villains' stories. Script Writing for Kids
July 29 - August 1, 12 - 2 PM Front Street Writers Studio, 123 W. Front Street, Traverse City In celebration of the Traverse City Film Festival, the National Writers Series is offering a four-day children’s script writing workshop. Young writers can attend a single workshop or all four days. To accommodate parents attending afternoon films, the studio will open at 11:30am and close at 2:30pm. Poetry MagicAugust 4 - 8, 9 - 11 AM
Front Street Writers Studio, 123 W. Front Street, Traverse City The best poems surprise us. Not just when we read them, but also when we write them. In this workshop, we'll practice the "tricks" poets use to open their brains’ windows so that little poetic miracles can sneak out. If you're curious about what kind of magic might be lurking in your everyday life this is the workshop for you! Comic Creations - REGISTRATION FOR THIS WORKSHOP IS CLOSED
August 11 - 15, 9 - 11 AM Front Street Writers Studio, 123 W. Front Street, Traverse City Love drawing? Love writing crazy stories? Learn to combine the two in this comic workshop! You will read great comics, brainstorm your own ideas, use words to create story ideas and draw classic comic illustrations to bring them to life. Halloween of the Mind - REGISTRATION FOR THIS WORKSHOP IS CLOSED
June 16 - 20, 1 - 3 PM Front Street Writers Studio, 123 W. Front Street, Traverse City Candy aside, what's really great about Halloween is getting to be somebody else for a change. Poetry does that too. In this workshop, we'll practice delving into a variety of lives. We'll tell the truth by lying, we'll use memory, sense, observation, and family history to craft the best poems we can. Great poems and poets will be our guides. Mystery MadnessJune 23 - 27, 1:30 - 3:30 PM
This crazy class will combine mystery writing with choose-your-own-adventures. We'll create one-of-a-kind mystery stories complete with quirky characters and surprising plot twists. Even More Terrifying TalesAugust 11 - 15, 1 - 3 PM State Hospital grounds Meet at Building 50 in the yard in front of Cuppa Joe each afternoon. Wear shoes for hiking and exploring! The best scary stories are filled with eerie suspense and creepy details–and our own State Hospital can provide plenty of both. What does the witch see through her one good eye? Where do ghosts go in the morning? Just what is that thing hiding in trails behind the hospital? Trail hikes, a tour of the hospital and the tunnels, and lots of interactive writing exercises will help you write your most bone chilling tale yet! Rumors and SecretsAugust 4 - 7, 1 - 3 PM Front Street Writers Studio, 123 W. Front Street, Traverse City In this four-day, non-fiction writing workshop you will work with professional working writers and poets like Mardi Link, Elizabeth Buzzelli, Robert Giles, and Catherine Turnbull to approach writing in different ways. Each guest writer will share the tricks of the trade: conducting interviews, doing research, and mining memories. Together you will explore the rumors and secrets of your lives and communities. You will discover how words can be used to bring them to light and put them in perspective! Master Poetry WorkshopAugust 11 - 15, 1 - 3 PM
Front Street Writers Studio, 123 W. Front Street, Traverse City Experience poetry as you never have before. Explore contemporary poetry in a workshop setting with francine j. harris, author of allegiance. Francine is a recent graduate from U of M’s MFA program, the 2013-14 Front Street writer-in-residence and a creative writing instructor at Interlochen Arts Academy. Be prepared for multisensory associative writing prompts and to mine your own experiences to bring out the poetry that lives in you. Flash FictionJune 23 - 27, 11:15 AM - 1:15 PM Front Street Writers Studio, 123 W. Front Street, Traverse City Micro-fiction, short-shorts, or nano-fiction—it goes by various names and gets defined in different ways, but whatever you call it, in this workshop we’re going to write, study and workshop it! We’ll read inspiring examples of the form, and workshop your own forays into the wondrous world of the very very short story. We’ll produce new material based on generative prompts and exercises—often using artifacts and found objects. Just because it's short, doesn’t mean it’s easy, but it is definitely fun!
