The Writer's Studio
The Writer's Studio (Session 1) : Poetry
Instructor: Michael Delp
Reading, discussing and writing poetry is an exercise in attentiveness to the nuances of language. Iʼve always believed that the better we learn to see and use language and imagery, the stronger we become as writers, regardless of the genre. Itʼs all about seeing and clarity and bringing the life of the mind and eye to life on the page.
Dates: March - May, 6 to 8 pm at the Front Street Writers Studio, 123 W. Front Street, Traverse City*
March 13 & 27
April 10 & 24
May 8 & 22
The Writer's Studio is an adult writing group that provides an engaging, vibrant gathering of like-minded working writers who embrace Mary Oliver's notion that "poems are not words, after all, but fires for the cold, ropes let down to the lost, something as necessary as bread in the pockets of the hungry." Participants will be guided by the notion that what is important in writing is the act of paying attention always with the idea in mind that writing is an organic, instinctual process that gets at what Oliver refers to as "that wild, silky part of ourselves."
In addition to workshop time, students will also meet with instructor Michael Delp on a one-to-one basis to discuss new work and writing in general. Michael will also be available to The Writer's Studio partcipants via email for online critique sessions. Whether students are interested in submitting their work to the vast array of online and print publications, or working on a full-length manuscript, Delp will help with the sometimes frustrating process of bringing writing from draft stage to publication.
*Some workshop sessions will meet at Delp's cabin on the Boardman River, Reeling Waters Lodge, which offers a unique setting for writing or simply just sitting in contemplation. Reeling Waters Lodge sits on 10 acres of wild, rambling land close to town and is a sanctuary for those who seek a place to work and gather as writers in search of developing their love of writing into a serious craft.
$450
Each session will be limited to 10 participants
